June 2002

Being a huge REM fan I've always wanted to go to Athens.
Mark and I drove into town late at night on a country road during what seemed
to this Okie gal to be tornadic conditions. When I see stop signs wobbling like weathervanes
I look for the nearest ditch to jump into! Luckily we made it into town and found shelter.

Next day we had a delightful breakfast at Bluebird and wandered around downtown Athens and
the UGA campus. I fascinated on a parking lot with rem-ish walls (see above): peeling paint, exposed brick and stucco
and faded advertising messages

It was a scorcher of a day so Mark took off for a public library where he could check into
his fantasy baseball teams (New Paltz Hippies, Upstate Bombers, and Whiteyville Rats).
I windowshopped around Athens' bookshops, record stores, and coffeeshouses, all of which were
exhibiting vintage posters of REM, B52s, Pylon, etc. It's a great college town.
